Here are the most common spelling rules in Afaan Oromo that writers often get wrong:
In Afaan Oromo, vowel length changes the meaning of a word. Long vowels are written by doubling the letter.
| Short Vowel | Long Vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a | aa | mana vs maana (different meanings) |
| e | ee | deeme = went, deemee = having gone |
| i | ii | bii = debt, bi = different meaning |
| o | oo | boo'aa = cry, boo = different |
| u | uu | dhuguu = to drink |
💡 Tip: Always double-check vowel length. Writing bishaan (water) as bisaan is a very common mistake — the 'h' and double vowel are both important.
The apostrophe (') represents a glottal stop called hudhaa in Afaan Oromo. It is a real consonant sound and changes word meaning.
| Without Hudhaa | With Hudhaa | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| a | a' | Different words entirely |
| boo | boo'aa | boo'aa = to cry |
Afaan Oromo uses two-letter combinations (digraphs) to represent single sounds. These must be written correctly:
| Digraph | Sound | Example Word |
|---|---|---|
| dh | Retroflex d | dhuguu (to drink), dhufa (comes) |
| ch | ch sound | chakkaa |
| ny | ny sound | nyaata (food) |
| ph | ph sound | phaaroo |
| sh | sh sound | shani (five) |
| ts | ts sound | tsaatii |
⚠️ Common mistake: Writing d instead of dh changes the word completely. For example, dhufa (comes) vs dufa (different word).
| Incorrect | Correct | Meaning (English) |
|---|---|---|
| bisaan | bishaan | water |
| nyata | nyaata | food |
| mana | mana | house (check context) |
| barbaada | barbaada | wants/needs |
| deeme | deeme | went |
| nama | nama | person |
| gaarii | gaarii | good / car |
